The months leading up to the 2008 Grand National will see owners and trainers entering hundreds of horses into the race. By the first week of April the number of entrants will have been cut down to 40 of the finest steeplechasers in the United Kingdom. On this page we will take a look at some of the runners tipped to take the 2008 Grand National.

Mr Pointment
Mr Pointment has scrambled up the Grand National runner rankings following an impressive performance at the Becher Chase in November. Mr Pointment’s 14/1 Grand National odds are not only the product of his recent form, but are also based on memories of 2004 Grand National winner Amberleigh House’s Grand National/Becher Chase double.

Butlers Cabin
The early favourite in the 2008 Grand National betting markets, Butler’s Cabin has been priced at under 20/1 since November of 2007. Grand National odds favour Butlers Cabin to finish placed based on his brilliant performance at the Irish National in 2007. With one win from one start at Aintree it is a good idea to place your ante-post bets on this 2008 Grand National runner before his Grand National odds are pared down any further.

Simon
Simon has spent the past year waiting to make amends for his fall at the 25th fence of the 2007 Grand National. Priced at 20/1 Grand National odds, bookmakers are backing Simon to put in the kind of performance that saw him win the 2007 Racing Post Chase. The jockey who rides Simon will play an important role in determining his performance and it remains to be seen who will be handed the task of extracting this fine racehorses’ full potential.

Numbersixvalverde
2006 Grand National winner Numbersixvalverde was weighted out of the 2007 Grand National. However, priced at 33/1 Grand National odds, Numbersixvalverde is one of the more interesting contenders in the field, given that he has proven class and will almost certainly be running lighter at the 2008 Grand National. With dozens of prospective 2008 Grand National runners falling by the wayside every week it is advisable to back this horse before the odds begin to deflate.

Joe’s Edge
Joe’s Edge may be growing somewhat long in the tooth, yet he is one of just a handful of 2008 Grand National runners to have won any race over 4 miles. Joe’s Edge was a favourite for the 2007 Grand National but pulled up during the race. Recent wins at the Scottish National and William Hill Cup indicate that Joe’s Edge has all the experience and class required to cause an upset at the 2008 Grand National. At present Joe’s Edge is priced at excellent Grand National odds of 33-1.
